THERE was a time where the radio airwaves was dominated by some of Katy Perry’s ditzy, bubblegum pop hits like California Gurls, Teenage Dream and Last Friday Night.
Let’s not forget how the singer first broke onto the mainstream pop scene with provocative single I Kissed A Girl in 2008. However, it seems that Perry is looking to ditch her fun-loving pop persona on her latest album Prism.
Perry got her eighth number one hit on the Billboard charts with lead single Roar. Those familiar with the singer’s tumultuous love affair with Brit comedian Russell Brand will cheer as she sings about overcoming setbacks and negative influences.
The album takes a darker turn with By The Grace Of God where she sings about “laying on the bathroom floor” and blaming herself for all that is wrong. In an interview withBillboard, she said the song is about coping with the breakdown of her marriage in 2011.
Then on tracks like Legendary Lovers and Unconditionally, it’s obvious that Perry is singing about her newfound faith in love.
Still, Perry has not completely ditched her California Gurls shorts. On the upbeat disco-inspired singleBirthday, she sounds like her cheeky partying self again. Some listeners may also want to party along toGhost, a uptempo electronic pop number.
But if you read the lyrics, then you’d be surprised to find that Perry is again singing about her former husband (“oh but you hit send and disappeared before my eyes”, referencing how Brand divorced her via text message). On Prism, Perry proves that she has not stopped partying. She’s just finding more reasons to celebrate.
