High-flying birds

NEED an unshaven version of The Lumineers? Austin, Texas-raised, Nashville-based folk rock outfit The Wild Feathers is your ticket. The band’s self-titled debut album is as solid as they come– with just the right amount of emotional strength, soulful earnest and swaggering confidence.

After touring with legendary names like Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson, it’s no surprise the quintet lean towards a folksy, bluesy Americana vibe. The five unique voices of Ricky Young, Joel King, Taylor Burns and Preston Wimberly, and Ben Dumas make this 12-track album a melodic blast – despite some of the songs running a bit same-ish.

On the positive, there are some real gems amongst the collection. You need to stay the distance with this bunch. The reward is far more than a mere beer buzz.

Left My Woman is a glorious mix of hopeful and lovelorn nostalgia on slow burn. If you need an anthem,The Ceiling is full of promise, bluegrass twang and heavenly harmonies. Easily one of the strongest tracks on the album is Tall Boots, which is almost country in its lyricism and accent. An addictive chorus and swooping vocals will make this one a fan favourite. Elsewhere, I’m Alive, is pure pop goodness while Got It Wrong is reminiscent of Tom Petty.

With Jay Joyce (Cage the Elephant, the Wallflowers, Emmylou Harris) as producer, The Wild Feathers may just be the road trip album of the year.

Driven by the vintage roots of The Band and fired up by Bruce Springsteen’s burning passion, this album is bound to attract the classic rock faithful and beyond.

The Wild Feathers not only answers the call of the open road – it pairs brilliantly with strong black coffee on a rainy day, when there’s nostalgia in the air and optimism in your bones.
