Hallyu star Rain got himself drenched in icy water, joining the company of Korean and global celebrities who’ve participated in the viral Ice Bucket Challenge. He pledged to donate KRW100mil (RM310,800) to the research of Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
“The meaning of participating in this campaign is very special to me. My father-like mentor Hong Seung-sung, who led me to debut as a singer, has been suffering from the Lou Gehrig’s Disease for three years,” he said on YouTube. “I’ve always thought how to return his love and gratefulness.”
Rain’s donation will be given to a college hospital that conducts research to find new treatments for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease
Hong, the president of Cube Entertainment, has trained many K-pop groups including Rain, 4Minute, B2ST and G.NA.
For the next three targets of the challenge, Rain nominated pop star Psy, actor Lee Byung-hun and Hollywood actress Megan Fox.
The Ice Bucket Challenge asks people to make a recording of themselves getting drenched with ice water, post it online and nominate others to do the same within 24 hours or donate US$100 (RM315) to ALS research.
In Korea, the challenge began when Korean singer Tim was nominated by his friend in the United States. He then nominated singer Sean, Brian Joo and K-pop idol Choi Si-won.
So far, many celebrities including G-Dragon, BoA, Jang Geun-suk, Yoo Jae-suk and Jo In-sung have taken on the challenge as well.
Girls' Generation goes to Japan
Girls' Generation will hold a concert in Tokyo to mark the fourth year of its debut in Japan, the group’s agency said.
The concert titled The Best Live At Tokyo Dome will be held on Dec 9 at Tokyo Dome, the first time the group is holding a solo concert in the venue, S.M. Entertainment said.
During the concert, the group will showcase the best of its hit songs and tracks from its latest album.
Ahead of the event, the group has uploaded a video that compiled its Japanese-debuting showcase, other performances in Japan and interviews with each member.
Last month, Girls’ Generation topped Japan’s Oricon weekly albums chart for the second week in a row, a record for a South Korean pop group, for its first compilation album released in Japan.
Jay Park's evolution
Popular hip-hop artiste, B-boy star and TV entertainer Jay Park, also known as Park Jae-beom, will be releasing his second full studio album next month titled Evolution, according to an announcement by SidusHQ entertainment agency.
Despite his packed schedule, with regular appearances on TV programmes such as SNL Korea and the second season of Dancing 9, Park has managed to consistently release a number of EPs over the past few years. However, the upcoming album will mark the star’s first full album release in more than two years since he unveiled his first solo album New Breed in 2012.
On July 25, the artiste released his most recent self-composed single Na Na featuring Loco. Park recently wrapped up his first concert performances in Shanghai and Cheongdo, China. In commemoration of his soon-to-be released album, he will also be holding a showcase in Seoul on Sept 2 at the Mecenatpolis Lotte Card Art Center.
Actor and singer Kim Hyun-joong has been accused of using brute force against his girlfriend.
According to the report, Kim is suspected of committing physical abuse from May to July. His girlfriend recently filed assault charges against him at the Songpa Police Station in southeastern Seoul.
“The two had been a couple since 2012. Since last May, Kim has fought with his girlfriend over his women issues. During their fights, Kim used severe physical violence against her,” an acquaintance of Kim’s girlfriend was quoted as saying.
The violence left the woman with injuries requiring six weeks of medical treatment due to her broken ribs in July. She was also injured in May with bruises on her face, chest, arms and hips, according to the report.
Kim’s girlfriend submitted a doctor’s note about her injuries and data to prove her relationship with Kim to the police.
Kim has enjoyed growing popularity with his drama Inspiring Generation, which helped him add a few more destinations such as Peru and Mexico to his concert schedule.
Kim is now touring China, Japan and Southeast Asia as part of his worldwide concert tour Fantasy. – The Korea Herald/Asia News Network
