Veteran underground bands return for homegrown extreme music blitz

Blast From The Past gig mixes up noisy nostalgia with freshly cut mayhem.

EXTREME metal outfit Infectious Maggots isn’t the sort of band to be consumed by nostalgia. Despite its pioneering credentials in the 1990s homegrown underground scene, the Klang Valley-based band continues to push forward. It will unleash a set of new material at the Blast From The Past gig at Black Box, MAP, Publika, Solaris Dutamas in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 5.

“We’re rehearsing and will be recording soon. It’s going to be an EP release called While You Wait For Us To Rot. The new material is shaping up sinisterly. No better time than now to introduce some freshly cut tunes to the masses,” says Infectious Maggots frontman/artist Fathul ahead of the band’s mid-evening set at the Blast From The Past show.

Infectious Maggots’s line-up also features bassist Jijoe, guitarists Lan Bear and Pi’e and drummer Lan Bye.

Thrash metal outfit Sil Khannaz, led by Jaie Jokhannaz (centre), is still a rampant force in the local fringe scene despite breaking the two-decade career mark.

With 1990s-era thrash metal acts like Sil Khannaz, Suffercation, Brain Dead, As Sahar and Necrotic Chaos also slotted for the Blast From The Past show, there is no shortage of metal sub-genres and gigging experience in the line-up. Punk outfit The Pilgrims, which needs no introduction when it comes to gate-crashing metal-based concerts, is also a highlight.

The Pilgrims lead singer Bob doesn't discount a conga-line when these veteran punks hit the stage.

"We're used to the crowd joining us on stage and we won't be letting them down. The Pilgrims will be playing the classics," reveals Bob.

“All the bands involved have played a part in growing the nation’s metal scene through the years. Years on, the bands are still keeping the flame alive and the passion for this particular type of music has never wavered among the fans,” says Jaie Jokhannaz, frontman of Sil Khannaz.
