British indie rock band The Cribs, led by frontman Ryan Jarman, is geared up for a career-spanning set at The Bee, Publika in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 11.
The Cribs set to celebrate 10 years of punk, chaos and anthems in Kuala Lumpur.
HAS it been 11 months since The Vaccines sold out and rocked The Bee’s Upfront series in Kuala Lumpur – leaving fans in a complete tizzy?
Time sure does fly! It’s not far from the truth that when you have a “proper” British indie rock act in town, you can expect the venue to be packed to the rafters. Word gets around.
Next up for the Upfront series is the arrival of indie rock outfit The Cribs, which was once described by British magazine Q in 2008 as “the biggest cult band in the UK”. The punk-inspired band plays The Bee, Publika in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 11.
The Wakefield, West Yorkshire-raised outfit – featuring the three Jarman brothers, two of them twins – has come a long way since its early years of building a following, playing sticky floored pub venues and zig-zagging in rented vans across Europe for gigs.
Formed in 2001, The Cribs has outlasted most of it peers (The Libertines, The Coral) and remain a significant crowd attraction from the pre-Arctic Monkeys era.
With twins Gary and Ryan and their younger brother Ross, The Cribs will land in Kuala Lumpur for a career-spanning setlist. It’s also the trio’s first visit here and with its first compilation Payola 2002-2012, a self-curated anthology, there is substantial material to unleash on the masses.
With a catalogue of five albums, The Cribs can always count on a solid live set, featuring Another Number, Hey Scenesters!, We Share The Same Skies, and Men’s Needs, right to fan favourites City Of Bugs, Direction and Our Bovine Public.
Over the years, the band has also crafted albums with an influential list of producers like Edwyn Collins, Alex Kapranos, Dave Fridmann and Steve Albini.
With the collaborative blessing of two alt-rock deities: Johnny Marr (extra guitars during the band’s commercial “peak” on Ignore The Ignorant) and Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth (the unravelled travelogue Be Safe), you can bet The Cribs is not your average “mainstream” indie proposition.
> The Cribs play the Upfront series at The Bee in Publika, Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur on Nov 11. Showtime: 8pm. Tickets are available at The Bee outlets (Jaya One and Publika), and at Rock Corner (Bangsar Village 1) for RM98 (pre-sale) and RM128 (regular). For more information, visit thebee.com.my.
