The former WWE star is now an actor starring in the upcoming 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' movie.
At first glance, Dave Bautista is intimidating, to say the least. He stands at a towering 1.98m, packed with sprawling muscles his plaid shirt can barely conceal. But as I sit for an interview with the 45-year-old Greek-Filipino, what I find is a down-to-earth, soft-spoken gentleman.
“I’m visually the biggest contrast. I look like a big strong athletic guy, a guy who would be very confident, and come in and take charge of the room,” the actor speaks in a voice so hushed, I find myself craning my neck to hear him. “But really, on the inside, I want to be the guy who walks in and is very unassuming.”
Bautista says he felt like a misfit even when he was growing up. “I was the kid who was attached to my mother’s leg. I didn’t say two words. I was very shy and reserved,” he says.
For ex-pro wrestler says he can relate to his character, Drax the Destroyer, in the film adaptation of the Marvel comic book superhero team of the same name, The Guardians Of The Galaxy. Drax is described as a “maniac” and a “physical brute”.
“I haven’t had the easiest life. I grew up really poor, like a lot of times we couldn’t afford food poor. And I still draw from that,” he says on using his own experiences to portray Drax. The film, which opens July 31, chronicles the journey of a bunch of intergalactic misfits as they try to protect a precious cosmic orb – and the universe – from falling into the wrong hands.
Bautista has found fame and fortune as a WWE wrestler since 2002. In 2010, he left the wrestling entertainment scene to pursue a proper acting career. Watch our full video interview in which he talks about his Asian connection, his vintage lunchbox collection, and the moment he cried when he landed the part of Drax.
