A quick guide to the Step Up franchise.
Step Up (2006)
The gist: Underprivileged raw talent Tyler (Channing Tatum) meets performing arts student Nora (Jenna Dewan). They pair up for a showcase that will determine their future in dance.
Big finish: A final piece on stage combining elements from both the street and modern dance worlds led by Tyler and Nora.
Step Up 2: The Streets (2008)
The gist: Andie (Briana Evigan), who grew up in the same neighbourhood as Tyler, wants to be a street dancer. After being kicked out from the 410 crew, she starts her own crew with privileged playboy Chase Collins (Robert Hoffman) and misfits from the Maryland School of the Arts.
Big finish: A slick street battle performance by the MSA crew in the pouring rain.
Step Up 3D (2010)
Location: New York
The gist: Fan favourite Moose (Adam Sevani), one of the misfits from Step Up 2, and newcomer Natalie (Sharni Vinson) join an international dance crew headed by Luke (Rick Malambri) dubbed the House of Pirates to compete in the World Jam dance contest.
Big finish: The Pirates bring the house down at the contest with a solid routine complete with costumes that light up.
Step Up Revolution (2012)
The gist: Sean (Ryan Guzman) recruits his crush, aspiring professional dancer Emily (Kathryn McCormick), for his flashmob called The Mob. What started out as a project to win a YouTube competition soon becomes protest art to stop a historic neighbourhood from being destroyed.
Big finish: The Mob makes a difference when they remind everyone of the community’s importance with a big dance number and impressive parkour feats.
Step Up All In (2014)
Location: Los Angeles / Las Vegas
The gist: Finding it hard to make it as a professional dancer in Hollywood, Sean forms a new crew with Andie and other familiar faces from previous Step Up movies to take part in a reality series that pits the country’s best dance crews against each other.
Big finish: The all-star team will be using the elements of earth, air, fire and water in their jaw-dropping final performance.
