Plot involves disturbing events and suspicious characters.
Screened in competition at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, the thriller features Ryan Reynolds in the role of a father whose daughter goes missing. Eight years after the mysterious disappearance, new evidence indicates that the girl is still alive.
Met with somewhat mitigated reviews at the 67th Cannes Film Festival, The Captive has been compared to Canadian director Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, another thriller centered on a case of kidnapping, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman.
The tragedy undermines the marriage of the girl’s parents, played by Ryan Reynolds and Mireille Enos, until they begin to discover objects connected to their missing daughter. Disturbing events and suspicious characters enter the picture, further complicating the plot.
Scott Speedman and Rosario Dawson round out the cast as a pair of investigators looking for the missing girl.
