The screenwriter of the original movie is set to produce the remake.

In the works for some time now, the remake of the 1980s classic has just taken a big step forward. According to the Tracking Board, Chris Columbus, who wrote the script for the original Gremlins movie, has agreed to produce an updated version.

The gremlins, cute little monsters that quickly turn into nightmarish beasts when fed after midnight, were seen on the silver screen in 1984 and 1990 in two features directed by Joe Dante. With their blend of dark humour and terrifying horror, Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch are now seen as cult classics.

When asked a few years ago about the possibility of working on a reboot of the Gremlins franchise, the screenwriter indicated that while he would enjoy working with the story again, he was reluctant to bring the gremlins into the CGI era.

“It’s impossible to recreate in a CGI environment,” he said. “I think it will inevitably lose some of its charm.”

Apparently Columbus has overcome these doubts, as he has agreed to produce the remake along with Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg via their KatzSmith Productions outfit. The producer of the original Gremlins, Steven Spielberg will also be involved.

The Tracking Board indicates that Spielberg and Columbus are also collaborating on the sequel to The Goonies, another 1980s classic produced by the former and written by the latter. — AFP Relaxnews
