Famed Japanese animation studio releases a trailer for its latest project.

The first trailer for When Marnie Was There, the new feature from the famous Japanese animation studio, was aired on Japanese TV recently and has made its way to YouTube.

When Marnie Was There tells the story of a friendship between a lonely orphan girl and a strange, equally lonely girl who lives in the ocean. The animated feature is adapted from the book of the same title by British author Joan G. Robinson.

Studio Ghibli is currently coping with the retirement of two of its star directors: Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, The Wind Rises) and Isao Takahata, whose latest film The Tale Of Princess Kaguya is due for limited release in the US this fall.

When Marnie Was There will be regarded as something of a test of whether the studio can still work its magic. Happily for fans, the trailer looks promising, with its lovely landscapes and nice graphics.

The feature, which will be released in Japan on July 19, was directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi (The Secret World Of Arrietty). A recording of the trailer, which first aired on Japanese TV, can now be seen on YouTube. — AFP Relaxnews
