Hong Kong actor Jackie Chan plays a commander in ‘Dragon Blade’.
This is the most expensive Chinese-language film in history.
East meets West in Chinese epic Dragon Blade, which sees Roman and Chinese forces unite to protect China from Emperor Tiberius.
Discussing the announcement at the Shanghai Film Festival, Jackie Chan said that he was “really excited to be in a movie with two of the most respected actors working today,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
With Chan already installed as China’s Commander of the Protectorate of the Western Regions, Cusack plays Lucius, himself general over a legion of 1,000 soldiers that went missing during a mission into China.
As Dragon Blade would tell it, that legion was pursued by Brody’s Tiberius and his 100,000 men, though Lucius finds himself an important ally in Chan’s character, Huo An.
The film takes its inspiration from a theory explaining typically Caucasian features among inhabitants of what was Liqian (now Zhelaizhai), a north-west Chinese settlement on the rim of the Gobi desert.
Built on a budget of US$65mil (RM210mil), the most expensive Chinese-language film in history is to commence its location shoot in Silk Road stop Dunhuang City and within the Gobi, directed by Daniel Lee of historical epics Three Kingdoms and White Vengeance.
Cusack previously co-starred in 2010 Chinese-language release Shanghai, while Brody was a member of the ensemble cast in 2012 Chinese film Back to 1942.
A release date of Feb 19 coincides with the Chinese New Year, marking the start of the Year of the Goat. – AFP Relaxnews
