Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit – Author Tom Clancy, who passed away last week, has definitely made an enduring character in CIA analyst Jack Ryan, who has appeared in a number of his books – and in turn, films based on the books as well. His earliest appeareance was in Clancy’s first novel, The Hunt For Red October, which was made into a movie in 1990 with Alec Baldwin as Ryan.
In that one, Ryan was just a lowly analyst, but one smart enough to realise something about a rogue Soviet submarine captain that no other analyst surmised. Ryan’s story continued in Clancy’s other books including Patriot Games (with Harrison Ford taking over the role), Cardinal Of The Kremlin, Clear And Present Danger and Sum of All Fears (where it was Ben Affleck’s turn to tackle Ryan).
Now the role has gone to Chris Pine, and he has got the action quotient and smarts to carry off this character, judging by the trailer.
Shadow Recruit is not based on one single Clancy book; instead, it features the character in a plot that is not unlike a Clancy novel. Written by Adam Cozad and David Koepp, it sees Jack Ryan as a young CIA analyst uncovering a Russian plot to crash the US economy with a terrorist attack.
Keira Knightley stars as Mrs Ryan. It also features Kevin Costner and Colm Feore. Kenneth Branagh is both the director and the film’s main villain (a Russian with a better accent than Sean Connery’s in Hunt For Red October)
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is scheduled to open here on Dec 31.
