Merry menagerie: Cloudy 2’s array of colourful characters – from humans to animals and food-imals to humans dressed like animals.
Cloudy With A Chance
Of Meatballs 2
JUST from the trailer, it’s obvious that this sequel is going to have a lot of puns about animals and food.
Watching the film, it becomes obvious that the filmmakers had loads of fun creating this world and making up new names for the food-animal creations spewed out of a machine that has run amok. This craziness is complemented by the animation.
So it all depends on the audience, whether they want to be annoyed by all those puns or to be tickled by them.
Considering that one of the main plot points revolves around a machine that produces animals based on food, well, you should know what to expect.
At the same time, the element of weirdness is elevated even further by the animation for the character Chester V, a businessman who runs an innovative company that our hero, Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader), joins. This character moves unlike any animated man before.
If the first film showed what happens when food rains down upon a town, here it takes the idea to the next level.
Even when the characters are not very endearing – the monkey joke involving a chimpanzee is a bit, erm, boring – they do carry the strange story forth for it to be entertaining if you let it. – Mumtaj Begum (***)
THAT endearing quality of Richard Curtis’ films is immediately encapsulated by the presence of both Bill Nighy and Domhnall Gleeson.
Curtis – whose previous films include Love, Actually and Notting Hill – includes an element of sci-fi (the male characters in this film can travel through time) but, in the end, it remains a character-driven piece with the love of a father and son making up its core.
Nighy and Gleeson play father and son, who teach each other (and the audience) that it’s best to count their everyday blessings instead of trying to rectify any disaster in their lives (which they can thanks to the time travelling bit).
The masterfulness of this feature is its sheer simplicity, while including all the fun bits that come with any time-travel tale. – MB (***)
