Tough guy: Robocop (Joel Kinnaman) is unstoppable.
The trailer for the reboot of Robocop – released next year – is out.
WHEN you are half-man, half-machine, is the man in control of the machine or the machine in control of the man? The 1987 film, directed by Paul Verhoeven, explored this question and from the looks of the remake’s trailer, it has the same idea.
Set in 2028 Detroit (that’s just 15 years from now), Alex Murphy is a police officer who patrols the streets to keep them safe for his family and the citizens.
Crime is escalating nonetheless, the consequences of which result in Alex suffering serious injuries. Unconscious, he ends up on the operating table of a company that wants to manufacture part-man, part-robot police officers. Whether he likes it or not, Alex has just signed up to be the first such cop.
In the original film, Alex was portrayed by Peter Weller – a capable actor who manages to get the audience’s sympathy despite his “robotic” look. Also the film had some of the funniest lines despite being really violent at the same time.
In the reboot, the role goes to Joel Kinnaman (of the TV series The Killing). Here’s hoping Kinnaman can bring the same quality to the character.
But the trailer shows that – though the film is equipped with special effects and is far superior to the original – it is quite dramatic. About the funniest thing in it is Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson with some really bizarre hairstyles, while Michael Keaton just camps it up in his role as a company man.
Robocop rides into cinemas in 2014.
