Past winners will be among the glitterati of Taiwan’s Oscars to mark its half-century milestone.
THE upcoming Golden Horse Awards will celebrate its 50th anniversary in a big, star-studded way, with Taiwan’s pride, director Ang Lee, chairing the awards jury.
Organisers on Monday said the multiple Oscar and Golden Horse winner will join top Chinese cinema directors Johnnie To of Hong Kong, Taiwan’s Hou Hsiao-hsien and Taiwan-based Malaysian Tsai Ming-liang in the celebration that starts with the Nov 8 festival and ends with the awards on Nov 23.
Sixty-seven past Golden Horse Best Actor and Actress award winners will attend the awards ceremony, including major 1970s movie stars such as Charlie Chin Hsiang-lin, Chin Han and Lin Feng-jiao (Mrs Jackie Chan), Taiwan’s Apple Daily reported. Hong Kong actress Maggie Cheung, announced in May as the festival’s ambassador, will be on the festival’s poster.
Tsai’s drama Stray Dogs, depicting a homeless family living on the edges of modern society and which is competing in the current Venice Film Festival in Italy, will open the festival. Nominations for the awards will be announced on Oct 1. – The Straits Times, Singapore/Asia News Network
