No amount of Meow Mix will ever make Mr Bigglesworth happy in the Austin Powers movies.
Not all movie sidekicks need their own dressing room. Some need a stable.
THE Lone Ranger may not be doing too well with the critics or at the box office but the star of the show probably isn’t too bothered by all of that. He probably cares more about whether or not his bales of hay are cut nicely, or whether the guy who brushes his mane will give him an apple after he’s done.
In case you’re wondering, we’re talking about Silver, the magnificent white horse whose name is also Silver in The Lone Ranger. Silver is great in the movie, and as a sidekick, he outshines the two human stars, Johnny Depp (who plays Tonto) and Armie Hammer (John Reid aka the Lone Ranger). He steals almost every scene he’s in with the actors, which, according to some critics, is not all that difficult to do.
Check out some of these other memorable animal sidekicks in films.
> Bruiser the dog in Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2: Bruiser Woods is a pampered Chihuahua that is not afraid to show its feminine side. Thanks to owner Elle Woods, Bruiser is always dressed in the trendiest and pink-iest duds, even though he’s all man. Er ... man-dog. He’s even been photographed wearing a pink tutu! Audiences simply loved it though. In fact, he became such a fan favourite that the second film actually focuses more on Bruiser, from his “real” family to his er, controversial love life.
> Mr Bigglesworth the cat in the Austin Powers movies:
Poor Mr Bigglesworth the Persian cat lost all his fur when he and owner Dr Evil got into a cryogenic pod and slept their way into the future. Because of that, Mr Bigglesworth becomes a terrible sour-puss who seems to hate everyone around him. Or maybe he just looks like that.
In one of the movies, we are introduced to a Mini Mr Bigglesworth, which belongs to Dr Evil’s clone Mini-Me. These cats seem to have a powerful hold on their owner. As Dr Evil puts it, “... when Dr Evil gets angry, Mr Bigglesworth gets upset. (Meow) And when Mr Bigglesworth gets upset ... people die!”
> Two Socks the wolf in Dances With Wolves: Dances With Wolves won numerous Oscars in 1991, including a best director nod for Kevin Costner, who also starred in the film. Although Costner’s character Lt John Dunbar was the focus of the film, Two Socks the wolf played an integral part in making Dunbar understand a world that seemed far removed from his own. Also, Two Socks was Costner’s only friend when he was living in isolation – the wolf’s the reason Dunbar got his Sioux name, Dances With Wolves – and he remained a friend till the end.
> Jack the undead monkey in The Pirates Of The Caribbean movies: He’s cheeky (naturally), he taunts Jack Sparrow all the time, he’s mean-spirited and he’s an “undead” creature. Jack, the capuchin zombie-monkey owned by Captain Barbossa, is featured in all The Pirates Of The Caribbean movies, although at some point he did manage to turn into a real monkey again. He’s also a pretty good “actor” – his facial gestures are always spot on! Some people even think that he did a better job than Keira Knightley.
> Flag the fawn in The Yearling: Jody has always wanted a pet. And since this 1946 film is set in the late 1800s, Jody, who lives in the woods, gets a fawn for a pet after his Pa kills its mother. Jody loves his fawn which he names Flag, and together they go about their days idling away in the, uh, woods. However, fawns grow fast and simply cannot be tamed so when Flag starts to cause havoc around the farm, Jody is forced to kill him. Although this coming-of-age film focuses more on Jody’s relationship with his parents, Flag makes for a memorable character because, well, he’s a real fawn. Not a CGI version of a fawn, or a cartoon. It’s the real thing. Plus, not many people get a fawn for a pet these days. Not even if you live in the woods.
