COME August, Malaysians can enjoy two animated features dubbed in Bahasa Malaysia in cinemas nationwide. On Aug 8, The Smurfs 2 will be causing more tiny trouble in our world as Papa, Clumsy, Grouchy and Vanity try to rescue Smurfette from the clutches of the evil Gargamel.

The trouble starts after Gargamel discovers that Smurfette knows the secret to turn his creations – creatures similar to Smurfs called the Naughties – into real Smurfs. So he kidnaps her, leading Smurfette to discover a new side of herself.

The voice talents for the English version are Katy Perry (Smurfette), Jonathan Winters (Papa Smurf), Christina Ricci (Vexy), John Oliver (Vanity) and George Lopez (Grouchy), with Hank Azaria portraying Gargamel. In the dubbed version, Datuk Aznil Hj Nawawi provides Gargamel’s voice. Other voice talents include Lisa Surihani (Smurfette), Hafidzuddin Fazil (Papa Smurf), Zizan Razak (Vanity), Elfira Loy (Vexy) and Ray ERA FM (Grouchy).

The second film to get this special treatment is Planes, set to open on Aug 15. This action-adventure – not unlike Pixar’s Cars – is about a plane named Dusty who dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. Unfortunately, Dusty is not built for racing, and he is afraid of heights. So he turns to a seasoned naval aviator to help him.

Dusty’s voice is provided by Dane Cook in the US version; in the dubbed version ERA FM’s Haniff Hamzah takes over the duties.

RIP, Vincenzo

ITALIAN screenwriter Vincenzo Cerami, author of the screenplay for Roberto Benigni’s Oscar-winning Life Is Beautiful, died on Wednesday at the age of 72.

“Vincenzo Cerami is the one person who has taught me how to strike people’s feelings, how to make people emotional,” Benigni said. “Knowing Vincenzo was the most incredible gift: the time spent with him throughout my life has been incredible,” he continued.

Cerami became interested in the arts when he studied under director Pier Paolo Pasolini.

He also co-authored the screenplay for 1991’s Johnny Stecchino with Benigni. – AFP
