Sinbad The Musical, a new and original musical featuring international and local singers, dancers, actors and musicians will open in Kuala Lumpur in April. Presented by The Actors Studio (in association with Australian partners), the musical is one of the biggest artistic collaborations between Malaysia and Australia.
“Sinbad has a great story with 18 wonderful songs and an unbelievably talented cast. It’s by far our biggest production to date,” says artistic director Joe Hasham in a release.
The show is inspired by the classic One Thousand And One Nights book and follows the adventures of Sinbad the sailor. In this musical, Sinbad arrives in a city that is under the spell of an evil vizier who has imprisoned the king and enslaved his daughter Yasmin.
Sinbad then joins forces with the city’s good people to rescue their king and Yasmin, as well as get rid of the vizier. Along the way the sailor meets a host of interesting characters like the magical Fatima and a general.
As many as 50 performers will be taking part in this family-oriented show, including actors from Malaysia, Australia, the Philippines and Singapore. According to Ric Herbert, who plays one of the lead roles, Sinbad is a show that has something for everyone. “It’s a magical show and of course it includes favourite characters drawn from the Arabian Nights – a
handsome swashbuckling hero, a beautiful princess and (an) evil wizard. Plus there’s the real stage magic – special effects with the Genie and the flying carpet,” he said in a statement.
Sinbad opens at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre on April 11 and will run until April 27, before heading to the Performing Arts Centre of Penang (May 2-11). For more information visit www.theactorsstudio.com.my, www.klpac.org and www.penangpac.org.
