All set: 988 presenters DJ May (left) and DJ Yinyin raring to rock the 13th Global Chinese Music Awards in October.
988 is the only radio station to host show in Malaysia in October.
NEXT month, the 13th Global Chinese Music Awards (GCMA) is set to take place in Kuala Lumpur. Local Chinese radio station 988 will be hosting it for the second time. It last hosted the awards in 2005.
988 is the only radio station in Malaysia that has been given the honour of hosting the annual Chinese music awards show in this country. The GCMA’s main objective is to promote the development of Chinese music and reward outstanding contributors in the Chinese music industry.
The annual GCMA was first introduced in 2000, with seven affiliate Asian radio stations from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia taking turns to host it. The seven radio stations are Beijing Music Radio, Shanghai Dong Gan 101, Music FM Radio Guang Dong, Taipei Pop Radio, Hong Kong’s RTHK, Singapore’s YES 933 and Malaysia’s own 988.
So far, some 22 acts have confirmed that they will be appearing at the awards. Homegrown musicians Penny Tai, Michael Wong, Gary Chaw, Jac Wu, Cheryl Lee and Isaac Dang are set to grace the event along with Hong Kong’s Joey Yung, Charlene Choi, Gillian Chung, Raymond Lam, Kay Tse, G.E.M and Adason Lo; China’s Bibi Chang, Hu Xia, Jike Junyi, Liu Meilin, and Jacky Xue; Taiwan’s Weibird Wei, Will Pan, and IO band; and Singapore’s Derrick Hoh.
This year’s theme for the international awards show is “Play.Music.Hard”, which Star Radio Group deputy group chief broadcasting officer Kudsia Kahar says represents the GCMA’s recognition of artistes’ perseverance in the pursuit of creating good music.
In a recent interview at the 988 office in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, 988 programming director Lim Tock Peng said: “A special crew from Hong Kong will be taking charge of the production of the show to add to the glitz and glamour. We also have a design theme for this year’s show and it is called punk fantasy. The presenters’ outfits will be really unique as they will be created by specially-commissioned designers.
“And, we encourage all who attend the show to dress accordingly, in order to participate in the fun. There will be a voting session for best-dressed viewer on the night of the show itself,” he added.
At the same interview, 988 deejays May and Yinyin revealed that they would be hosting the red carpet event at the GCMA.
“There will be eight pairs of emcees in total. We are really looking forward to the show,” quipped the bubbly gals about the awards gig that is barely three weeks away.
Public voting is now open for eight categories: Most Popular Male Singer, Most Popular Female Singer, Most Popular Band, Most Popular Original Song, Most Popular New Singer, Most Popular Duet Song, Most Popular Group and Most Popular Top 20 Songs.
Malaysians can have a say and show their support for their favourite musicians by joining listeners from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore on the online voting platform via www.gcma2013.com. Listeners from China will be voting via another official website. Local music fans can make their way to Tropicana City Mall in Petaling Jaya, Selangor at 2pm on Sept 14 for 988’s announcement of the 13th GCMA’s Best Performing Artiste from Malaysia. There will also be an unveiling of the new trophy design.
The 13th GCMA will be held on Oct 5 at Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. Tickets are available at www.ticketcharge.com.my and priced at RM50, RM100, RM150, RM200, RM250, RM300, RM500 and RM800. For more information, visit www.988.com.my.
