More to come:The G-Factory boutique in Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur.
CASIO’S G-Shock watches, which mark their 30th anniversary this year, continue to grow in popularity among a new generation of fans.
That popularity has led to the opening of the ninth G-Factory concept store in Malaysia.
The latest store, in Mid Valley Megamall Kuala Lumpur, joins the G-Factory outlets in Fahrenheit 88 Kuala Lumpur, Sunway Pyramid and Paradigm Mall in Petaling Jaya, Gurney Paragon Penang, Dataran Pahlawan Malacca, City Square Johor Baru, East Coast Mall Kuantan and Suria Sabah in Kota Kinabalu. It can also be found in KLCC Isetan, Suria KLCC.
G-Factory boutiques incorporate “visual merchandising” in presenting a distinctive view of Casio’s five major brands – G-Shock, Baby-G, Edifice, Sheen and Protrek.
Marco Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd, the authorised distributor of Casio G-Shock in Malaysia, plans to open three more G-Factory stores before the end of the year. Marco Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Marco Holdings Bhd, is synonymous with the Casio brand among watch retailers in Malaysia after more than 40 years of aggressively building Casio’s presence in Malaysia through innovative marketing, promotions and premium customer service.
Globally, the G-Factory network comprises more than 355 stores.
In with conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the G-Shock watches, Marco Corporation is partnering with two of Formula Drift’s top drivers to lead its marketing promotions at full throttle.
“Auto racing is an established winner as a marketing vehicle,” said Marco Corporation deputy general manager Lam Wai Khuen.
“We are keen to reach out to the next generation of customers — and Formula Drift is the perfect platform to achieve our objective.”
The United States Auto Club Media Guide estimates that globally, more than 25% of total sports sponsorship is invested in auto racing.
“Racing is exciting, unique, thrilling and glamorous, and it is seamlessly aligned to Casio G-Shock’s brand values,” said Lam.
G-Shock’s origins can be traced to Casio research and development chief engineer Kikuo Ibe, who was inspired to create a series of unbreakable watches after dropping and breaking a watch given to him by his father.
The first Casio G-Shock DW-5000C, launched in 1983, was built around the “Triple 10” concept — 10-year battery life, 10-bar water resistance, and 10-meter drop-shock resistance.
The Malaysian edition of Formula Drift, held at the Speed City Kuala Lumpur track earlier this year, featured the biggest pool of drivers from around the world competing for the coveted top spot in the Top 16 tandem battles.
This year’s event also featured race car demonstrations, drifting clinics, and various opportunities for the spectators to interact with the drivers. Casio G-Shock also sponsored Formula Drift drivers Kenshiro Gushi and Fredric Aasbo, who competed in the local event.
“Casio G-Shock, recognised for its strength, adaptability, and water/shock resistant qualities, complements the fast-paced and active lifestyle of drifting,” said Lam.
“It’s the ideal chemistry between the brand and the spirit of Formula Drift.”
A limited edition Casio G-Shock timepiece G-7900A-7FDDR was released in conjunction with the second round of the 2013 Formula Drift Asia Series. All 50 pieces of the limited edition allocated to Malaysia have been sold out.
