Axiata-linked Idea Cellular in RM2.14b deal


KUALA LUMPUR: India's Idea Cellular, in which Axiata Group has a stake of about 19.8%, is set to acquire radio spectrum in two service areas from Videocon Telecommunications Ltd for 3,310 crore rupees (RM2.14 billion).

The telecoms service areas are Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh (West).

The deal is for a quantum of 2x5 MHz contiguous blocks of 1800 MHz in each service area, with the right to use the spectrum until December 2032.

Idea Cellular, a unit of the Aditya Birla Group and India's third-biggest mobile phone operator, intends to use the spectrum block for deployment of 4G (LTE) services in these service areas, Aditya Birla said in a statement.

On completion of the transaction, Idea Cellular will have a full range of mobility services across 2G (GSM), 3G (HSPA) and 4G (LTE) technologies in all of its eight leadership markets of Maharashtra and Goa, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh (West).
