TOKYO: Japanese wage earners' total cash earnings fell 0.6% year-on-year in August, down for two months in a row, government data showed, underscoring the challenge Prime Minister Shinzo Abe faces in encouraging firms to boost wages to aid economic recovery.
Overtime pay, a barometer of strength in corporate activity, rose 3.1% in the year to August, up for a fifth straight month with a 4.2% gain in overtime at manufacturers, but weaker special payments, including bonuses, dragged down the overall pay.
